First Look
Last year, Platz Hobby released the first C-46 Commando kit in 1/44 scale and the best kit of the subject in any scale to date. You can see how nice this kit builds with Fotios Rouch's build. Platz has followed up that release with some new tooling to render the JASDF C-46ECM which is actually a family of Commandos modified into electronic warfare trainers.
The kit is molded in light gray styrene and presented on three parts trees plus one tree of clear parts. the two larger gray trees are the same as the original C-46D release while the small gray tree provides a new forward fuselage to accept the new radomes plus a selection of nose, ventral and dorsal radomes to replicate the unique configurations of three service aircraft.
The three subjects rendered here with decals and radomes include:
- C-46ECM, 91-1145, JASDF (long nose radome, large dorsal radome, large ventral radome)
- C-46ECM, 91-1140, JASDF (short nose radome, no dorsal radome, small ventral radome)
- C-46ECM, 91-1143, JASDF (no nose radome, small dorsal radome, medium ventral radome)
This is another nicely engineered kit and will be a nice addition to the small-scale modelers' flight lines.

My sincere thanks to Platz Hobby for this review sample!
