USS Kelvin NCC-0514 - Star Trek 11 burst onto the movie screens of the world mid 2009 in the latest re-incarnation of the phenomena that has endured for well over 40 years. In the opening scenes we see USS Kelvin, one of the most advanced Star ships in Starfleet, go head to head with an unknown vessel of enormous proportions only to be destroyed. The old AMT movie Enterprise kit was the starting point for this model, other parts were turned from plumbers PVC pipe of various diameters, engineering plastic, brass and aluminium. The saucer and the upper and lower nacelles would be mounted to a section of 3.0mm Perspex for alignment, this being cut to shape on a bandsaw after gluing a print of the Autocad drawing directly onto it. The raised panel detail was created with a product called "docupol", purchased from a local quick copy shop, this is a paper thin plastic sheet with a self adhesive backing that also has enough flexibility to follow some curves. Testors model master Camouflage grey (F S 36622) was chosen as the base colour and the whole ship was given three light coats. The model was finished with Tamiya acrylics and artist's watercolours and pastels over hand drawn pencil panel lines. The project took 17 months to complete.
