Review
Angus Konstam tackles an oft-ignored topic in Warships in the Spanish Civil War – number 300 in Osprey’s vast “New Vanguard” range.
After useful introductory notes, coverage recaps Spain’s pre-war navy, 1936 uprising events, “command and manpower” issues, and wartime actions.
Osprey’s slim study then segues to a tabular “specifications” section – fully 25% of text – surveying, class-by-class, all Spanish warships of the conflict. Entries include, for instance, builder, launch and commission dates, performance data, armament, and service notes.
Just remember that Konstam restricts contents to Spanish Republican and Nationalist vessels only: no Italian, German, or other international units that participated, even peripherally, in the fighting appear.
Photos, extended captions, action paintings, selected bibliography, and handy index augment the effort. Modelers will certainly appreciate the color profiles.
Osprey’s pithy précis totals just 48 pages. Make it your introduction to these fascinating, but largely neglected, warships.
