Review
The path to Hitler's conquest of Western Europe ran through Denmark, Norway, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Belgium.
Now the military organizations, combat records, uniforms and insignia of all five countries dominate a cool, compact compendium from Osprey.
Packed with photos, color uniform plates, extended captions and charts, Hitler's Blitzkrieg Enemies 1940 deftly distills these fascinating footnotes. While text largely targets land forces, air and naval assets also enjoy minor mentions.
Dutch steel helmet color? It's here. Which nation resisted Nazi aggression the longest? Yep. The force structure of Luxembourg's minuscule military? That, too. Rank and branch insignia details? Definitely.
We even learn that, given the speed of events, some residents probably slept through Germany's conquests of Denmark and Luxembourg!
France's stunning 1940 defeat often eclipses the roles of Denmark, Norway, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Belgium in Hitler's Western Blitzkrieg. This handy handbook helps adjust the asymmetry. I just wish author Nigel Thomas included a selected bibliography for those seeking further study.
