If you've read Model Aircraft Magazine or subscribe to Em Scala (In Scale), you will recognize Mario Serelle's work. His latest project is a how-to, step-by-step build of the Kinetic Model 1/48 Mirage IIID and finishing it in Brazilian (FAB) air force colors. His outline for presentation of this project is:
- Materials and References
- Cockpit
- Assembly
- Painting
- Decals
- Weathering
- Other Parts
- Final Steps
Like many similar project build monographs, this title is well-illustrated (180+ color photos) with descriptive captions that clearly show you how to replicate each step in your own build. The presentation is good for the basic modeler and you'll find some innovative techniques that will interest the more experienced modeler. One interesting approach in replicating a Mirage IIID with more than a few hours of flight time is his reverse pre-shading technique. Rather than primer gray with overlayed black panel lines, he starts with a black primer and selected colors to marble the airframe panels before applying the actual camouflage colors.
This title takes you from start to finish with the Kinetic kit and while the focus is on the colors and markings of a FAB Mirage IIID, the techniques apply to any Mirage (or other subject) you might choose.
