First Look

Ammo by Mig Jimenez is family of paints and weathering products designed to take your models to the next step. Master modeler Mig Jimenez helped to launch another paint line by developing and teaching modelers how to make achieve great results with those products. A few years ago, he created his own company and developed a new series of products to tackle areas overlooked by other paint companies.

This new set really blows my mind. This is a completely new way (for me) to approach pre-shading a model! There is literally black and white in this set plus a matt varnish and a transparency mix. According to the instructions, regardless what your paint scheme (or even model subject) looks like, you mix black and white to create a really dark gray to replicate the darkest shadow on the undersides of your model. Gradually add white and spray progressively lighter areas until you're using pure white on the top of the model. What you end up with is a black and white model, but you're not done yet. Add the matt varnish to seal in the 'preshade' coats', add the transparator to turn the model's actual base color slightly transparent, and apply that over the previous work. What you have is a pre-shaded model with some dramatic effects already in place waiting for the rest of your weathering and such. Amazing.

This set consists of six 17ml bottles of acrylic paints and each bottle has a mixing ball inside to make the job of getting those pigments stirred back up much easier. The colors in this set include:

  • Transparator
  • Washable White
  • Washable Black
  • Satin Varnish
  • Matt Black
  • Matt White

This set comes with a eight-step instruction booklet to walk you through the process, but once you've got this down, you'll want to try this not only on armor subjects, but aircraft, naval, space, science fiction, and other subjects as well. There are many possibilities here. It is nice to have good color/paint options when working on your more in-depth projects, especially colors that interoperate well with other brands.

My sincere thanks to Ammo by Mig Jimenez for this review samples!
