First Look
Here's an iconic release for 2001 fans - the HAL 9000 communications terminal. This is the full-scale replica of the studio terminals that featured that eerie red eye of HAL's camera. Moebius could have made this kit very simple, but they provided separate parts for those items that receive different colors to make the final result look great. This kit consists of five parts molded in silver-gray styrene plus two clear lenses. This set also includes a pre-wired red LED with switch and 9 volt battery connector. Two of the gray parts are for a display stand, but I plan on nerding out and mounting several on the wall, in my office and in my workshop. The set also includes a set of decals that include the distinctive HAL 9000 identification across the top of the terminal as well as typical camera markings for the adjustable lens frame.
This will be a quick project for modelers with average (or better) skills and as I said, the parts layout make painting this terminal very easy indeed.
For those with a twisted sense of humor and have one of those camera-equipped door bells, you could mount that camera behind this plate and talk to unsuspecting visitors through your HAL 9000 faceplate. So many possibilities, so little time...
CultTVman Hobby Store has this kit available at $37.99.
