First Look
Hasegawa has been producing a variety of subjects in their 'egg plane' series and Fujimi has answered with their own solution - egg ships. They have (so far) released three Imperial Japanese Navy World War Two warships in this series, each a caricature of its full-scale appearance.
This kit represents the battleship Kongo and is the first time I've seen one in this series. The kit is molded in medium gray styrene and presented on five parts trees, plus one tree molded in hull red styrene containing (of course) the lower hull and associated details.
As you can see in the images, this caricature is still quite detailed and even has a set of self-adhesive markings for the wooden deck and various markings.
If you're looking for an interesting change to your regular modeling subjects, this kit will certainly be an eye-catching model to say the least and hopefully Fujimi will expand the coverage of this concept as well. Could you imagine the battleship USS New Jersey in this format?
My sincere thanks to DML for this review sample!
