First Look
The 25 pounder was introduced into service just before World War II, during which it served as the major British field gun. Combining high rates of fire with a reasonably lethal shell in a highly mobile piece, it was the British Army's primary field piece well into the 1960's, with smaller numbers serving in training units until the 1980's. The design was the result of studies looking to replace the 18 pounder. Unlike the 18 pounder, the 25 pounder used howitzer type variable charge ammunition. The 25 pounder was separate loading, the shell was loaded and rammed then the cartridge in its brass case was loaded and the breech closed. An important part of the gun was the ammunition limber. The trailer carried ammunition, 32 rounds in trays, protected by doors.
The kit contains 5 sprues of gray plastic parts, 4 DS molded tires and a sheet of photo etch detail parts. Contained in the kit are the full gun, the complete limber and a crew of 6. Detail on all of the parts is typical Dragon, amazing! The figures are very well molded and have excellent facial features. Decals are provided for the ammunition. Key features of the kit are:
- Optional firing or transport mode can be selected
- Authentically detailed circular gun platform
- Detailed limber doors can be assembled open or closed
- Moveable gun breech mechanism
- Realistic barrel w/hollow muzzle
- Gun shield molded with rivet detail
- Components allow gun to elevate
- Crisp rivet detail incorporated
- Tires made from DS
- Provision for open ammo trays
My sincere thanks to DML for this review sample!
