First Look
The People's Liberation Army Navy Type 052D Destroyer is a new class of ship currently under development. It differs from earlier destroyer designs in having a stealthier hull design and new AESA radar. It also features a vertical launch Missile System capable of launching both surface to air and sea skimming missiles. A hanger and flight deck is provided at the stern for a helicopter. Power is provided by a CODOG system with 2 x Gas Turbine and 2 x Diesel engines giving a top speed of 30 knots. The Changsha is the second ship of the type 052D class, following the Kunming. Both ships are currently fitting out to get ready for sea trials. These ships are being referred to in the Chinese press as the "Chinese Aegis".
This new kit from Bronco Models features parts molded in grey styrene that are very crisp and have outstanding details. Also included is a sheet of photo etch brass that does include all of the ships railings. Nice touch, Bronco!! A display stand and a brass name plate are also included. The decals provided are very well printed and in perfect register.
Some key features of this kit are:
- Multi-part and highly detailed 130mm HPJ-38 Main gun
- Multi part Ka-28 Helicopter
- Helicopter can be built in flight mode or with the main rotors in the stored position
- Photo etch railings included
- Vertical missile bay can be built open or closed
- Hanger bay can be built open or closed
- Main radar array is primarily made from photo etch and is highly detailed
- Multi part H/PJ12 gun
The instructions are very well written and will be easy to follow. Paint colors are called out during construction. Also included is a well printed copy of the box art that is suitable for framing.
