First Look
When I had the pleasure of reviewing Academy's new 1/48 F-22A Raptor kit, I was impressed with most aspects of this new-tool kit. At the time, I didn't consider the cockpit one of the weaker areas, though it is a little soft on detail, particularly around the multifunction displays on the instrument panel.
What was a bit surprising was that the kit was no sooner released and there are not one, but two different aftermarket cockpit detail sets available for the Academy kit. Let's take a look at one:
Wolfpack released this superdetail set which consists of almost 30 parts cast in dark gray resin. The set includes a nicely rendered cockpit tub, new instrument panel section, new ejection seat, new canopy frame, and lots of small details that include cable guards, seat details, and even the canopy lift.
The casting in this set is nicely done with no bubbles or other problems apparent in my set. You'll have a bit of a challenge installing all of those tiny parts like the canopy lock lugs, especially when the cockpit is supposed to be painted black, but this is where some conservative dry-brushing will make these details pop.
This set will definitely make your F-22's front office stand out. If you're looking for a detail set that also looks nice but isn't quite as complex, look here.
