First Look
Monogram's 1/48 B-58 Hustler kit is still one of their nicer toolings and one that has yet to be rivaled by another company (so far). The tooling is more than a decade old and is based upon older tooling standards, which translates to raised panel lines, but otherwise most of the detailing is nicely done.
It doesn't matter which kit we're talking about, nobody has released a perfect kit as there are limits to what can be done with styrene molds in terms of cost and complexity. Leave it to the aftermarket world to engineer enhancements that are targeted to the AMS modeler who want to address some of those minor flaws.
Fisher Models has released three sets to enhance the Monogram Hustler. The kit renders the elevons rather simply. On the full-scale aircraft, the elevons (combination elevators and ailerons) are honeycombed structures that have a distinct set of reinforcement lines that are visible on the surfaces. This new pair of elevons reflect that surface pattern and give you the option of posing these elevons in other that pure neutral.
These two parts will add a little more realism to your next Hustler project!
My sincere thanks to Fisher Model and Pattern for this review sample!
