First Look
Monogram's 1/48 B-58 Hustler kit is still one of their nicer toolings and one that has yet to be rivaled by another company (so far). The tooling is more than a decade old and is based upon older tooling standards, which translates to raised panel lines, but otherwise most of the detailing is nicely done.
It doesn't matter which kit we're talking about, nobody has released a perfect kit as there are limits to what can be done with styrene molds in terms of cost and complexity. Leave it to the aftermarket world to engineer enhancements that are targeted to the AMS modeler who want to address some of those minor flaws.
Fisher Models has released three sets to enhance the Monogram Hustler. This set addresses the engine intakes and provides new 'full depth' intakes with the aero spikes and J79 engine faces to better replicate the look of this Mach 2+ bomber.
The set comes with sixteen parts:
- Four replacement seamless intakes
- Four J79 engine compressor faces
- Four intake aero spikes
- Four actuating rams for the spikes
The seamless intakes at full depth will really enhance the look of your B-58. The J79 afterburner nozzles are another item that is popular to replace in this kit, but those are readily available from Cobra Company, Aires, and others.
My sincere thanks to Fisher Model and Pattern for this review sample!
