First Look
Yellow-Wings Decals has released produced a welcome addition to their line-up - markings for the Special Hobby 1/32 F2A-2 Buffalo kit (reviewed here). The kit decals are nice out of the box, but for those who want other options, your wait is over.
While the kit provides markings for VF-2 and VF-3, both examples are pre-war 'yellow-wing' machines. So it is with a touch of irony that Yellow-Wings Decals produces markings for two camouflaged examples as well as a yellow-wing example.
Like the kit decals, this set provides markings for a yellow-wing example from VF-2, but these markings are for the section 5 leader (green band and wing chevron) and a nice array of stenciling. In addition, this set also provides markings for an overall Non-Specular Gray machine from VF-3 in 1941 and a blue over gray example from a USN training squadron circa early 1942. The specific aircraft are:
- F2A-2, 1418, VF-2, 2-F-13, USS Lexington
- F2A-2, 1432, VF-3, 3-F-17, USS Saratoga, 1941
- F2A-2, 1422, Training Sqn, 02, 1942
As usual, Yellow-Wings Decals provide essential tables of data for other aircraft in VF-2 and VF-3 including their bureau numbers and corresponding section assignments, in case you'd like to replicate a different aircraft with these decals.
Yellow-Wings Decals can be purchased directly from their website at www.yellow-wingsdecals.com.
My sincere thanks to Yellow-Wings Decals for this review sample!
