First Look
Starfighter Decals has released this useful decal set for modelers of contemporary carrier aviation. Here is a set of decals to render most of VF-84 circa 1980. This set recreates the markings of this squadron operating the F-14A Tomcat aboard USS Nimitz. What is equally interesting (at least to me) is that this squadron aboard the Nimitz at that time of the filming of the movie 'Final Countdown' and during the support mission for the Iranian hostage rescue mission.
This set provides Skipper's MODEX 201 plus line aircraft 202, 203, 204, 205, 206, 207, 210, and 212. Pity CAG (MODEX 200) wasn't included. You can see that this set does provide almost all of the black backgrounds for the aircraft from anti-glare to ventral fin as decals. All you need to do is paint the vertical stabilizers black, the airframe gray over gray (or gray over white if you're backdating a little) and these decals do the rest. This set even provides the frames for the canopy and windscreen. NICE!!
If you want to really dress up the Tomcats on your Nimitz deck, this is a great set. The only down side is that you'll need markings of equal quality and detail for the rest of the air wing, but I suspect those will be coming along soon enough.
You can purchase these decals directly from Starfighter Decals on their website.
My sincere thanks to Starfighter Decals for this review sample!
