First Look
Here is the latest release from Caracal Models providing four 'colorful' options for the Trumpeter 1/48 F-106A kit. Two are standard Air Defense Command examples and two are flight test aircraft.
The aircraft presented in this set include:
- F-106A, 59-0057, 318 FIS, McChord AFB
- F-106A, 59-0083, 48 FIS, Griffis AFB
- F-106A, 59-0061, B-1B Flight Test Chase, Edwards AFB, 1987
- F-106A, 56-0467, AFFTC, Edwards AFB, 1959
The early flight test example is the speed record aircraft and still carries a 'buzz number' (FE is the code for F-106 and 467 are the last three digits of its tail number). The second flight test example was one of the F-106s assigned to serve as chase aircraft for the B-1B program at Edwards AFB. Check your references when using this set to see if your subject had the clear canopy or the framed type used at initial production. The instructions depict the speed record holder with a clear canopy which didn't yet exist until the early 1970s.
