First Look
Begemot Decals is an interesting decal company from Rostov-on-Don, Russia that offers a nice array of markings for Russian-built aircraft. In this release, they've provided THE most complete set of stencils ever produced for the MiG-29. This set focuses on the earlier MiG-29 variants including the MiG-29 (9.12) Fulcrum A, MiG-29 (9.13) Fulcrum B, and MiG-29UB (9.51) Fulcrum C. These stencils are out just in time for the Trumpeter 1/32 MiG-29 9.12 kit released several months ago and the upcoming Trumpeter 1/32 MiG-29UB 9.51 kit. Of course, these will work with the venerable Revell 1/32 MiG-29 9.12 and MiG-29UB 9.51 kits that have been around for a while.
As with the previous releases, this set provides accurate stenciling and placement instructions for:
- MiG-29 9.12
- MiG-29 9.13
- MiG-29UB 9.51
In addition, the set provides markings for the external pylons and weapons including:
- APU-470
- APU-73
- APU-60
- APU-68UM3
- BD3-USK
- R-73M
- R-60M
- R-27R
- R-27ER
- S-24B, B-8M
- UB-32-57
- KMGU-2
- RBK-500
- RBK-250
- SAB-250
- FAB-100
- FAB-250
- FAB-500
The decal printing is perfectly in register. The instructions are printed on three sheets that provide decal placement for each aircraft type and external stores placement. What is refreshing is to be able to zoom in on the images and read the Cyrillic stencils that are sharply and clearly printed. You won't find the gibberish commonly passed off as Russian by other decal companies.
If you're wanting to busy up the surface details of your next 1/32 MiG-29 project, this is the set you've been waiting for. If you have one of the earlier Trumpeter 1/32 MiG-29 kits (MiG-29M and MiG-29K) you can use these stencils as the many of the stencils will be correct for those variants and not many folks are going to argue with you since the MiG-29K never entered service with the Russian Navy though the type was sold to the Indian Navy, and the MiG-29M was redesignated as MiG-35 but the type has yet to find a buyer.
