First Look
Afterburner Decals has turned out some impressive decal releases covering contemporary US subjects and this one is no exception. This latest set provides the aggressor mounts flown by the 527th Aggressor Squadron operating out of RAF Bentwaters (Woodbridge) in the UK for USAFE and NATO training support.
As usual, the instructions are printed in color to provide clear placement of the various distinctive markings. There is a separate set of sheets showing placement of the standard stencils and markings. There are six aircraft presented on this sheet, with two alternative markings provided for the squadron commander's aircraft, for a total of seven options. These include:
- F-16C-30A-CF, 85-1479, Red 01, 527th AS, RAF Bentwaters, UK, 1988
- F-16C-30A-CF, 85-1479, Red 01, 527th AS, RAF Bentwaters, UK, 1989
- F-16C-30C-CF, 86-0216, Red 12, 527th AS, RAF Bentwaters, UK, 1988
- F-16C-30C-CF, 86-0229, Red 04, 527th AS, RAF Bentwaters, UK, 1988
- F-16C-30C-CF, 86-0231, Red 13, 527th AS, RAF Bentwaters, UK, 1988
- F-16C-30C-CF, 86-0237, Red 16, 527th AS, RAF Bentwaters, UK, 1988
- F-16C-30C-CF, 86-0249, Red 05, 527th AS, RAF Bentwaters, UK, 1988
This decal set provides you with the sufficient markings to replicate at least two of these aircraft. If you look over the decal sheet, you can see that this set is complete with the names of the flight crews and maintainers. Someone has done their homework!
If you're looking for a nice subject for your next Viper project, this is the right set to get you there. If you're a fan of colorful commanders' aircraft as I am, you'll need to stock up on a few of the Tamiya, Hasegawa, or Kinetic F-16 kits.
My sincere thanks to Afterburner Decals for this review sample!
