First Look
Afterburner Decals continues to turn out some impressive decal releases covering contemporary US subjects and this latest set is no exception. This release is just in time for a number of recent re-releases of the Hasegawa 1/48 F-4S Phantom II kit. While the various releases from Hasegawa provide markings for a variety of high and low-visibility color schemes, none of them have tackled the distinctive camouflage designed by aviation artist Keith Ferris back in the early 1980s.
This decal set provides markings for six US Navy Reserve and US Marine Corps Sierra Phantoms and these examples are a cross section of the three main color patterns used on these aircraft.
The examples presented here include:
- F-4S, 155749, VF-301, ND/011, 1984
- F-4S, 153832, VF-302, ND/200, 1983
- F-4S, 153882, VF-302, ND/203, 1983
- F-4S, 153814, VMFA-321, MG/04, 1985
- F-4S, 153904, VF-202, AF/211, 1984
- F-4S, 155531, VMFA-112, MA/04, 1985
This decal set provides you with the sufficient stencils and markings to replicate two of these aircraft (though you only have walkways for one). If you look over the decal sheets, you can see that the set provides national markings and maintenance stencils. If you can get additional maintenance stencil sets for the F-4, you can render any or all six of these examples presented here.
My sincere thanks to Afterburner Decals for this review sample!
