Review

Here's a welcome title from Squadron/Signal Publications, the Saab 37 Viggen in their Walk Around series. Unlike many other aircraft subjects, there are not many good modeling references for the Viggen and this title fills that void nicely. Without going into extensive detail on the history and development of the aircraft, this title gives a good overview of the subject and then focuses on each of the main variants of the type including:

  • AJ-37 - air-to-ground fighter
  • SK-37 - two-seat trainer
  • SF-37 - photo-reconnaissance
  • SH-37 - maritime reconnaissance
  • JA-37 - interceptor fighter

The title is well-illustrated with color photos of each variant with good close-up shots of key areas of interest for the modeler including the cockpits. Attention is also given to the weapons and support equipment that keeps the aircraft loaded and ready for duty. Even though the aircraft has been retired from active duty, the Viggen remains a popular subject for modelers, especially with that distinctive splinter camouflage.

You'll definitely want to add this title to your library whether you're going to tackle the subject on your work bench. Definitely recommended!

My sincere thanks to Squadron/Signal Publications for this review sample!
