First Look

AK Interactive has been producing a very wide range of paints and weathering products over the last several years targeted to the armored fighting vehicle and figure modelers. In this release, we have their latest set of colors to replicate any of the seven four-color camouflage patterns developed by the US Army's Mobility Equipment Research and Development Cener (MERDC). These seven schemes used the same pattern for any given vehicle but changed out three of the colors to adapt the vehicle to the global region and season. The seven schemes included: Gray Desert Verdant, Red Desert Verdant, Snow w/Open Terrain, Snow w/Trees, Summer Verdant, Tropical Verdant, and Winter Verdant.

AK Interactive AK 4230 MERDC Camouflage Colors Set

This set contains eight 17ml bottles which include:

  • AK4013 Forest Green (FS 34079)
  • AK4214 Light Green (FS 34151)
  • AK4222 Earth Yellow (FS 30257)
  • AK4223 Earth Red (FS 30117)
  • AK4231 Dark Green (FS 34102)
  • AK4233 Sand (FS 30277)
  • AK4234 Field Drab (FS 30118)
  • AK4237 Insignia White (FS37875)

This set is missing the fourth color that is used in every MERDC scheme, and that is black. Since most folks have black handy, this set provides you with the tools to replicate the colors for the scheme you choose for your next 1970s US Army subject.

The formulation of this set is a thicker viscosity tailored for good coverage using a paint brush though it can be airbrushed as well. This gives you the flexibility to apply base coat, camouflage, etc., using your airbrush and then use the paints for touch-ups after installing photo-etched railings and other details.

My sincere thanks to AK Interactive for this review sample!
