For those of us who've seen the masterpiece movie 'Avatar', you've might have wondered how long it would take for a kit or two to appear of the unique craft featured on the big screen (in 3D). Fantastic Plastic announced the AT-99 Scorpion Gunship a few months back, and I couldn't wait to get one on order.
Molded in white resin, the kit is nicely done for a limited run kit and this 1/72 model consists of 53 parts, including two vacuformed canopy (one to mess up, one spare).
The main fuselage is cast as one solid part with the engine doghouse molded separately. The cockpit is hollowed out for the single-place pilot's seat.
The lift fan shrouds are nicely cast and can be positioned as desired onto the engine doghouse. Two sets of fan blades are provided for each shroud.
You can see in the images that there is a nice array of rocket pods, Hellfire-like missiles, and gatling guns. While there are a few small parts to deal with, this project isn't overly complex and will look outstanding with some planning and good painting/weathering.
The kit does provide a set of ALPS-printed numbers to render 87-701 tail number as well as a set of generic number for you to render any other tail number you might wish.
This is a nice looking kit and I'm looking forward to seeing it built-up and on its skids on my display shelf. The movie was awesome and I hope we'll see the utility craft as well.
