First Look
We looked at this kit when it was first released in 2010, but it would be useful to remind you about how nice this kit is out of the box. You can see our original first-look here. So why are we seeing this kit again? Overtrees. If you haven't noticed some of the releases from Eduard lately include various kits out of their catalog being issued in their 'Overtree' series.
What is different about this release versus their Profipack or Weekend editions? First and foremost: price. Second, this is a barebones kit - you receive the same sprue trees as their other editions, but the kit comes in a white box and it doesn't include decals, photo-etch, masks, or instructions. This is literally a barebones kit and comes out of their surplus parts storage in their warehouse.
What to do with a kit without instructions? You haven't visited Eduard's website (eduard.com) lately. This is kit 8184X which is the barebones version of 8184. If you search their website for kit 8184, you'll find the complete instruction book in PDF format ready for download, so that is the major problem solved.
What about that beautiful color photo-etch? More good news: Eduard is selling their surplus photo-etch for these kits as well. If you look up 8184-LEPT, there is the surplus color photo-etch available for $9.95. Since the kit's downloadable instructions cover the photo-etch, you're covered there as well.
So for the fraction of a ProfiPack release, you can purchase the Fw 190D-9 kit and photo-etch. If you don't mind not having the kit decals, you either have aftermarket decals for this subject already or you can find many options available out there.
If you want to do some kit bargain shopping, these Overtree releases are worth watching for and the kits availabe vary each month. One thing to note however, Overtrees kits and photo-etched parts are only available from the Eduard website (eduard.com). Whether you want one of these Dora kits or one of Eduard's other kits in Overtree form, keep an eye on our Eduard release news, Eduard's website, and/or their Facebook page to find out the next opportunity for a bargain.
My sincere thanks to Eduard for this review sample!
