First Look
Last month, we had the pleasure of looking at Airfix's newest kit, the 1/72 Lancaster B.II which demonstrated a new level of detail coming from this brand. For a heavy bomber though, the kit lacked that one ingredient that gives it purpose - bombs. The instructions indicated that these would be available in a separate kit. I received quite a few emails from modelers upset that the kit didn't at least contain some bombs.
Well here is Airfix's new Bomber Re-Supply Kit, and it isn't only about the bombs. This is quite an interesting set that deserves a closer look! The set is molded light gray styrene and presented on five parts trees. This kit isn't five trees of bombs. What you have here is a companion set for not only the Lancaster B.II, but any RAF Bomber Command subject and provides a nearly complete diorama or vignette in this box. The only thing missing are the ground crew figures.
Among the features and options in this kit:
- 1 x detailed Bedford truck with choice of cargo bed or water tank
- 1 x detailed standard Tilly
- 1 x detailed tow tractor
- 1 x oil bowser (trailer)
- 1 x maintenance trestle
- 2 x bomb trolleys
- 1 x motorcycle
- 2 x step ladder
- 1 x 55 gallon drum
- 6 x gun storage cases
- 4 x large wheel chocks
- 2 x small wheel chocks
- 3 x Jerry cans
- 1 x tool box
- 1 x bicycle
Oh yes, then there are the bombs:
- 6 x 500lb MC bombs
- 6 x 1000lb MC bombs
- 6 x 4lb incendiary bombs and carrier units
- 1 x 4000lb HC bomb
- 1 x 8000lb HC bomb
This is a very nicely engineered set from Airfix and will make an excellent companion set for your favorite Bomber Command subject or even to use on its own to depict an empty parking space with the crew waiting for their aircraft's safe return.
My sincere thanks to Hornby USA for this review sample!
