First Look

I was happy to see the S2F kit from Kinetic Models in 1/48 scale as this old bird is one of my favorite subjects. Until the F11F and F-14, Grumman was well known for putting the pointed end of their aircraft in the tail section and the Stoof (S2F) was no exception. The one thing about the Stoof in US Navy service, these aircraft carried some very colorful markings!

Fightertown Decals is the first to market with a decal sheet for the Kinetic Stoof and as you can see here, they've replicated five very colorful aircraft.

The aircraft presented in this set include:

  • S-2G, 152806, VS-37, NH/720, USS Kitty Hawk, 1974, CAG aircraft
  • S-2G, 152374, VS-37, NH/701, USS Kitty Hawk, 1974
  • S-2E, 152842, VS-30, AR/103, RAG, Sharkmouth
  • S-2E, 152839, VS-38, NT/301, USS Ticongeroga, 1970-71
  • S-2E, 149865, VS-31, AS/35, USS Wasp, 1968

The markings are sharp and in perfect register. The decals are printed by Microscale and you'll note that all of the decals are printed as single layer decals. You don't see the two (or more) decal layers that other companies force you to lay one atop the other in order to recreate the artwork. Fightertown Decals takes care of that for you with quality artwork and Microscale printing.
