First Look
Furball Aero-Design has reissued their decal super set that provides a nice selection of pre-low-visibility examples that are sized for the Hasegawa 1/48 F-14A Tomcat kit. This set provides options for seven different subjects complete with airframe stenciling and walkways enough for two kits. Note that the early dates and color schemes for these aircraft also mean that you should use the early gas vented gun doors on your kit, not the later NACA scoop doors refitted to the F-14A later in its life as well as the F-14B/D.
- F-14A, 159631, VF-24, NG/200, USS Constellation, 1976
- F-14A, 160393, VF-84, AJ/200, USS Nimitz, 1978
- F-14A, 161134, VF-101, AD/101, NAS Oceana, 1982
- F-14A, 160666, VF-111, NL/200, USS Kitty Hawk, 1983
- F-14A, 159825, VF-114, NH/1000, USS Enterprise, 1984
- F-14A, 159446, VF-142, AE/200, USS America, 1977
- F-14A, 158621, VF-124, NJ/400, NAS Miramar, 1974
Note: This reissue has a note that indicates that the VF-84 color profile (above) should not have the tan radome.
The sheet is printed by Cartograf and the printing is very well done. What's more, none of these decals require the modeler to stack multiple layers of markings atop one another to recreate artwork. This trend by some other decal companies of producing multiple-layer decals is unfortunate as it puts the burden on you to do the work of what should have been done by the decal maker.
My sincere thanks to Furball Aero-Design for this review sample!
