First Look
Custom Aeronautical Miniatures has been producing decals for a while though they have had few releases until recently. We'll look these over but first we'll start with their first release in 1/48 scale which is still available. This set covers three A-7E Corsair II aircraft as the aircraft neared the end of its career. One of those examples was VA-72's CAG aircraft as it appeared at the end of Operation Desert Storm in 1991 before the unit returned stateside to resume their transition into the F/A-18 Hornet.
The three subjects included in this set include:
- A-7E, 160552, VA-72, AC/400, USS John F. Kennedy, ODS, CAG aircraft, 1991
- A-7E, 153830, VA-147, NG/401, USS Kitty Hawk, 1987, Skipper's aircraft
- A-7E, 158835, VA-12, AG/414, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1985
The sheet is printed by Microscale and the printing is very well done. What's more, none of these decals require the modeler to stack multiple layers of markings atop one another to recreate artwork. This trend by some other decal companies of producing multiple-layer decals is unfortunate as it puts the burden on you to do the work of what should have been done by the decal maker.
You can acquire these decals directly from Custom Aeronautical Miniatures' website.
My sincere thanks to Custom Aeronautical Miniatures for this review sample!
